Reading

In the EYFS at Grange Lane, we intend to build a curriculum which has reading at its core across all curriculum areas. We value reading as a key life skill and are dedicated to enable our pupils to become lifelong readers We are determined to ensure that all of our pupils learn to read regardless of their background, needs or abilities.  We intend to construct a curriculum for reading, which is designed to give children the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in later life. We aim to provide opportunities for children to access a range of different texts; fiction and non-fiction that enables them to develop a love for reading. Planned activities are intended to further foster the love and understanding of quality texts that are read to the children. Opportunities for reading are provided through daily guided reading sessions and endless opportunities for children to practice and apply their learning in provision. Children are provided with fully decodable books that are matched to their ability.  We understand that parents and carers play a vital role in the development of early reading and in nurturing positive habits and attitudes towards reading. We actively encourage this and their contribution. Throughout the EYFS we aspire for children to learn key vocabulary through the use of exciting, books that are linked to pupils’ interests.
