Maths

The intent of our Maths curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the development of every child’s ability and achievement in the area of Maths. We intend for all children to be taught a rich, balanced and progressive curriculum using Maths to reason, problem solve and develop fluent conceptual understanding in each area. The maths curriculum is built on a progression of skills and knowledge based on Development Matters and the National Curriculum. The skills and knowledge are built upon in each year group based on the needs of the children, ensuring we build on what has been taught before and working towards defined end points. We believe that mathematical concepts and reasoning must be key to teaching maths. Therefore cross – curricular links are used where the mathematical objective remain integral to the lesson. Vocabulary is of paramount importance in maths and all staff model this and encourage the use of maths vocabulary by children. Reasoning opportunities are provided in every lesson for the children to practise using mathematical vocabulary. Our calculation and maths policy and curriculum plans support the skills, knowledge and vocabulary which is to be taught each year and built upon, supporting our intent for the maths curriculum.
